| Based in Las Vegas, The Wave Sound is no stranger to supplying the city’s venues with audio systems, nor is it any stranger to Turbosound, having worked with the company’s products for a number of years. This holiday season saw it add a Flex Array system to its inventory and the results were just what The Wave’s owner, Scott Fisher, was looking for.
First to benefit was a New Year’s Eve party at Treasure Island for the casino’s high rollers. Coverage was required for a 10,000 square foot area and Fisher recommended three TFA-600HDP cabinets and two TFA-600LDP per side.
“The hotel’s staff said the system worked really well,” says Fisher. “They loved the fact that the flybar angle could be changed while it was under load. They said the coverage was great, the sound was great, the subs were better than needed and far superior to another manufacturer’s system they have rented in the past. Overall it was a very good experience.”
Over at the Mirage, American Idol winner David Cook performed at the hotel’s premium nightclub, Jet. The show was recorded for national broadcast on the Fox Network as part of its New Years Eve program, which also featured Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver fame, Chris Daughtry and Robbie Kinevil amongst others.
“The show took place on Dec 30th,” recalls Fisher. “We had also done sound on the 29th in the same room and with the same stage for Scott Weiland. For various reasons, that show was done on a non-Turbosound system, which was removed on the morning of the 30th and replace with the Flex Array system for the David Cook performance. All the club’s personnel preferred my Flex Array rig over the other system.”
The ground stacked rig comprised three TFA-600HDP and two TFA-600LDP per side, augmented with a pair of TSW-718 subs for what Fisher describes as ‘a little extra thump’.
“David performed two songs,” says Fisher. “He did them both twice, with a short break in between to move the cameras. For the second ‘set’ I told them they could go up on their volume, as I was able to monitor the speakers from my vantage point. I was told the second set was quite loud, but one thing that struck me was that my guy at Front of House said ‘Many boxes get harsh sounding at high levels. These were very loud for the second set, but it was a good loud.’ And David’s FOH/production manager, Jason Moore, said he loved the boxes.”
The final event saw Counting Crows as headline act for a multi-national technology company’s private party at the LAX nightclub in the Luxor Hotel.
“The set up for the room was quite complicated,” explains Fisher. “We utilized three hangs of speakers: two hangs of two boxes and one hang of four boxes. We also ground stacked two Flex Array subs and three Flex Array tops, with two additional Flex Array subs underneath the stage.
“While Dom Harter – Turbosound’s R&D director - was out here, he trained me on the Turbodrive™ control system that is built into the DP boxes, which was very useful. Flex Array is very easy to rig and very easy to use and I am very excited about continuing to use this rig in the future.”
