Shut up and... get me Flex Array

From October 23rd to 26th, thousands of William and Mary alumni and students gathered in Williamsburg, VA for the College’s annual Homecoming weekend. A definite highlight was the Homecoming concert at the college's newly renovated 2300 capacity Lake Matoaka Amphitheater, where English Indie pop duo The Ting Tings headlined, with The Cool Kids, a Chicago-based hip-hop group, brought in to open for them.

Providing audio was local production company, Soundworks, which brought in its new Turbosound Flex Array system for the event.

"Soundworks has done this event for the college for the last 10 years," explains the company's founder and president, Steve Payne. "For the past two years, we used our Aspect system with great success (six TA-800H over six TSW-721 subs ground stacked per side). This year, we thought we would try out our new Flex Array system in a ground stacked application."

Five TFA-600H with six TSW-721 subs per side were deployed, achieving good coverage and good level everywhere. "We didn't have quite the amount of headroom we have with six TA-880H, and you wouldn't expect there to be from a medium sized system, but it was plenty for 2300 people," says Payne.

John Dodkin, The Ting Tings' front of house engineer, had his first experience of Flex Array when the band played at the Pilton Party, Michael Eavis's 'thank you' gig for the residents of the Somerset village of Pilton who cope with the yearly invasion of thousands of music fans to Glastonbury Festival.

"I had never seen Flex Array before, but I'd heard that the Turbosound chaps had been getting it together," he says. "It was fantastic - consistent throughout the big top.

"It was so easy to get Katie's (White – lead singer) vocal in my face. The Ting Tings use a whole pile of samples that Jules (De Martino) fires with his feet, as well as his kit and Katie's guitar. The small Flex Array boxes gave off a massive, but crisp, sound.

"I was happy to turn up to a show in a theatre in France and see Flex Array there. It was in the air this time and again it gave off a huge sound with very little reflection off the side walls. In Williamsburg, the PA covered the whole area and hit the back row as hard as the front. It was really impressive.

"Thanks Turbosound!"
